Ochre Print Studio

Julie Hoyle and Angela Poole are artists and printmakers with a studio at Lockwood. For over a year now they have been working on setting up the print room ready to be used by other artists. Julie and Angela have brought a lot of interesting equipment to Lockwood from their previous print workshop, and are currently teaching the service users basic printing skills which include screen-printing, mono-printing, dry-point and collagraph. These are all various techniques of printmaking and involve using an etching press and screen-printing equipment. In previous years the print room had been used as a textile print room, used for printmaking onto materials to make cushions, aprons and t-shirts. Now the print-room is set up for making fine-art pictures and prints.

Julie and Angela intend to regularly exhibit the prints that the service users produce during their weekly workshops and have already had an in-house exhibition earlier this year. The exhibition was called ‘Us in Many Colours’ and the theme was the self-portrait. The show successfully expressed the personality of the group; it was colourful, happy and interesting.

2008

The next exhibition will be held outside of Lockwood in a gallery or art centre sometime in the spring of 2008.

Street Processions has been running for the last three years, creating lantern processions and carnivals across the county. Service users from Lockwood are always asked to be involved in creating large sculptures for these events. Two more carnivals have been planned in Guildford and Bracknell next year. The theme for 2008 will be ‘Endangered Animals’. Watch this space for more information!Street Processions welcome working with any community groups.
This is the third year that Street Processions have supported the Weyfield Lantern Procession, which is part of the Surrey Celebratory Arts Project. The project aims to build a network of artists and communities skilled in celebratory arts practice to make celebrations a regular part of community life. Street Processions worked with Lockwood amongst others to create the lanterns.

Service users enjoyed making costumes and props for the Guildford Flower Fiesta procession through the town centre in June 2007. This was the opening event to mark the Guildford Summer Festival.

Mary created a glass light sculpture, which was exhibited in October 2007 at Marks Barfield Architects in Clapham. Andrew Priestnall was one of the key service users involved in the sculpture. The piece named ‘The Smell of the Moon’ also in collaboration with Sita will be expanded and tour the country at various venues. It will be shown at Lockwood on 7th December 2007, then in Birmingham in January 2008.

Mary is collecting glass jars to expand her piece, if you have any unwanted ones then please send them to Mary Branson at Lockwood.
