What's Next?

If you are part of one of the Surrey County Council day centres, community groups or residential homes for people with learning disabilities and want to get involved, contact Phil on 01737 737149, phil.mack@surreycc.gov.uk

Phil will then visit and speak to the person in charge, explaining how ‘About Us’ works. Together they will look at the group wanting to get involved with ‘About Us’ or decide which group might benefit most from the project.

Phil then arranges to meet the relevant staff member to talk through the project, the paperwork involved for the staff member and identify the topics to be covered.

She visits the group, shows them an About Us portfolio and talks about the project.

Phil encourages the group to take each other’s photos – they can see their picture and decide if they like it! She also chats to each person to find out more about them.

People are asked to sign the photo consent form and the short record form which has their home details on.
The group decide which specific modules or units they want to work towards.

Phil books a date to re-visit the group with each person’s portfolio file, so they can make sure she’s got the information right.

She also brings learning evidence materials (on paper and on CD) to help the group prove what they have learnt.

Now the exciting bit!

The group do their practical learning, gathering lots of evidence – maybe by doing activities, completing worksheets, taking photographs, or having discussions. There’s lots of ways this can be done!

Each month, the staff member sends Phil the monthly register, showing how much time each person has spent on the project.
Phil is available to answer any questions or concerns that might arise, and to visit groups to see how they are getting on.

When the group feel they have got all the evidence to complete their unit/module, Phil visits them. She goes through each person’s work with them, chatting about what they have done and giving gentle feedback.

She might suggest a little more work is needed and give ideas on how to do this.

Otherwise, the work will be signed off and a date planned for the presentation of the ‘About Us’ certificates made. The presentation is marked with a little drink (bubbly fruit juice of course!) and cake.

In many cases, the certificate presentation photos will then appear on the About Us website– under ‘About Us’ learning, and ‘About Us’ awards! Look under your centre to see if anyone’s got their certificates yet.

Phil’s marking work is then checked and if all is okay, an official OCR or OCN certificate is produced. These are presented at the Gateways User Meetings or in a setting agreed by the group.

Phil will also see what the group would like to work towards next and send them learning materials to help with this.

Onto more achievements!
