Woman with Gateways computer

‘About Us’ builds on the success of the Gateways IT project using specialised computer equipment, digital cameras and other technology to provide fun, accessible learning. It aims to help learners move towards independence and, for some, to work towards employment.

Initially funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) through the Learning Skills Council until March 2007, the project provides flexible, individualised learning for its students, embedded into their existing activities. Over 320 people across Surrey are involved in the project, based in day centres, community groups and social enterprise businesses.

Subjects are varied and wide-ranging, including:-

· self-development such as assertiveness training
· IT skills, like word processing, Powerpoint, internet use
· Communication, such as delivering talks, group working and communication books for people with complex needs
· Vocational skills like horticulture, catering and office skills

Learning materials are designed to suit the individuals or small clusters of learners and use photographs, pictures and symbols with minimal text to make them easy to understand.

The project has numerous benefits, including the provision of a pictorial CV of people’s skills and abilities, as well as increased self-confidence and greater independence.
